日本画Japanese Painting

思いもよらないコロナ禍の中で、今年度の卒業生と修了生は大画面の制作に取りかかることになりました。
身につけていた制作や勉強の方法はペースやリズムの変更を余儀なくされ、計画通りにいかない日々があったようです。それでもアトリエには、それぞれの絵に向かっている学生たちの変わらない姿がありました。
彼らはアトリエを共にして技法材料を学び、写生を続け、古典模写に取り組み、発想を練り上げ、構図を考え抜き、日本画制作の苦楽を味わってきました。卒業制作と修了制作は、そんな坩堝の中で学生一人一人が切実な思いを抱えながら創り出した唯一無二の作品です。
今年も新しい日本画の芽吹きがあります。その発見を楽しみに、ご高覧いただければ幸いです。

Students in the Japanese Painting course began work on the large panels meant to serve as their graduation and completion works this year in a totally unforeseen environment — the novel coronavirus pandemic. The impact of this contagion has forced our students to change the pace, rhythm, and other aspects of their approaches to creation and studies they mastered over the years. They faced difficulties in bringing these works to completion as they had originally envisioned them. Despite such severe disruptions, however, we saw them diligently engaged in the quest to complete their paintings in the studio.
The studio serves as a crucial place to learn about a vast range of key techniques and materials. Students devote countless hours to the process of sketching as well as learning from classical works by reproducing them. In doing so, they further refine their own concepts, elaborating on structural composition as they come to appreciate both the invigorating joys and stiff challenges associated with the creation of Japanese paintings.
The resulting works by our undergraduate and graduate students are unique. They are both instilled with and convey the earnest thoughts and emotions of every student laboring in the midst of a crucible-like environment.
We have witnessed the inspirational emergence of new concepts of Japanese painting again this year. I hope that you will enjoy viewing these works and discovering the emerging artistry of their creators.
