わかろうとしてもどうしてもわからないことがある。それを認めて諦めず、わからないことに向き合うことはとても大切なことだ。教科書を理解して、テストで速く正しい答えを出しなさい。わからないのは悪。努力が足りていない。私たちはそんな強迫観念を植え付けられてきている。わかりやすいが良しとされ、わかりにくいものは無視される。私はこういう人、この国はこんな国と、レッテルを貼ればわかりやすくなる。しかし、私はこういう人なんてひと言で言える人なんているだろうか。絶対こぼれ落ちるものがある。そのこぼれ落ちるものを拾い上げて対話するのが、わからないさと向き合うこと。地球環境のことも、民族・宗教間の紛争も、自分の将来のことも、簡単に正解が出せるような問題ではない。だからこそ、わからないことに向き合う姿勢が必要となる。それがこの大学で学べること。きっと今年もわからないことに向き合った良作に巡り会えるはずである。（藤崎圭一郎）
Certain matters seem impossible to grasp. It is crucial to recognize this fact without abandoning the quest for clarity. Humans are fond of obsessively simple concepts. Textbook contents can be understood, so we should be able to rapidly and correctly respond to test questions. Failure to comprehend is bad; our efforts are lacking. Things easy to grasp are considered good, while those difficult to perceive can be ignored. To make the world easier to deal with, we often label ourselves, define our country, and so forth. I doubt that anyone can be described in such simple terms. There will always be areas that escape our grasp. We’re facing up to obfuscation by picking up these areas and discussing them. Similarly, can the global environment, disputes between ethnic groups and religions, our own futures and other matters be defined in such streamlined terms? We owe it to ourselves to confront matters we struggle to understand.
Students learn this at TUAT. This exhibition grants us encounters with excellent works that engage with phenomena that go beyond our ready understanding.
