油画専攻、と言いつつもこの科の教育の特徴は多様さと自由。絵画から出発し、あらゆる手法で学生は表現を模索する。昨今「多様性」とことさら括弧に括られた言葉が叫ばれる中、彼らは逆にそれが何のための多様性か、そもそも世界の前提はどう有るのか、という問いに直面している。covid-19の混乱に適応しながら学部時代を送った彼らは、日々新たな戦争を映像的に受容させられる。インターネットやAI含めた他我問題の坩堝に生きてもいる。時代の共通事項を持って俯瞰的に卒業制作を鑑賞するのは可能だ。一方で俯瞰をかい潜るように地道に積み重ねた手作業、不器用な言葉で模索した日々の結晶に、個々の人生の質を見出したくもある。私たちは、世界を反映する多義的な存在であると同時に、一切の意味を押し付けられぬ裸の存在でもある。彼らが一つの時流の大義に追い込まれることなく、長い時代を編む独自の「目と手」を持ち続けることを願っている。

The oil painting course is defined by a dynamic blend of diversity and freedom in which our students summon up a vast range of methods to discover new avenues of expression.

For our students, the increased use of “diversity” with brackets and parentheses triggers notions about the specific purposes of such diversity, and confronts them with questions about their frank assumptions of the world.

COVID-19 has marred their undergraduate years, and they have been constantly besieged by images of this new conflict. They have lived in a crucible of issues other minds created, including via the Internet and AI. We can appreciate their graduation works from a bird’s-eye view encompassing shared issues of the era in which we live.

Meanwhile, students diligently produced a series of handcrafted work and searched out ways to convey their messages as if they slipped through such bird’s-eye view. We may want to search out the essence of their individual lives in the fruits of their endeavors. We may be defined as a diversified existence reflecting the world around us, while concurrently projecting a fully exposed presence with no set meaning. I hope our students are not drawn into any specific cause of the times, but instead continue to cultivate distinctive “eyes and hands” so essential in weaving the extended era to come.
