My heartfelt congratulations go out to all Tokyo University of the Arts students completing their undergraduate and graduate studies. I am also deeply grateful to all persons involved in staging these exhibitions despite the numerous restrictions the COVID-19 pandemic continues to impose upon us.

COVID-19 has forced you to spend your student lives—a precious period of life—with major restraints on social activities. You may feel that your original hopes and expectations have been betrayed. It is my firm belief, though, that such adversity nurtures art—anxiety, isolation, anger, helplessness and other intense emotions are all driving forces for creation. I sense your tremendous passion in these exhibition works, reflecting the paths you have followed to discover yourselves despite an unprecedented feeling of stagnation.

The Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games were staged after a year’s delay due to COVID-19. There were arguments about whether to hold the Games during a pandemic. Once the competitions began, however, the athletes inspired great hopes and dreams through their performances. The enthusiasm COVID-19 had suppressed spread to all corners of Japan. The same holds true for art, which people instinctively thirst for in their hearts. When this virus is brought under control, I’m confident that art and culture will flourish again. Please carry on with your studies in that spirit.

We face complex issues related to poverty, war, racial discrimination, environmental destruction and other problems that conventional thinking cannot solve. It is difficult to accurately foresee what lies ahead. The expectations artists face are no longer limited to doing outstanding work in their fields. They are expected to reach beyond their specialized domains to contribute to happiness and social progress. Art is naturally rooted in the human consciousness, bringing richness to the wider world. When linked to science, medicine, welfare and other core fields, artistic endeavor transforms society by creating new value.

To all of you embarking on your journey as artists, I urge you to pursue your creative activities with absolute sincerity, and to focus on what you can contribute to society. I am confident that your endeavors will help create a fruitful world full of new hope and vision.
