Art Knows No Graduation or Completion

Katsuhiko Hibino
President, Tokyo University of the Arts

In art, there is no such thing as graduation.
By its very nature, Geidai is a venue for the study of art.
Although space is furnished to pursue art, from which there is
no graduation, our students graduate despite
realizing that they will never truly leave
the domain of art.

In art, there is no such thing as completion.
As noted, Geidai is a venue for the study of art.
Although space is furnished to pursue art, in which there is
no completion, our students complete their work
here despite realizing that the study
of art never truly reaches completion.

Although periods of learning are tentatively separated,
lying beyond those borders are fields of challenge to
be crossed while continuing to learn.
And there is no end to these fields of challenge.
That, in short, is art.
A pursuit without graduation or completion.
